Written exams i.e. essay exams, short or long answer exams

Writing exams is getting harder as people now write via a keyboard. So, if you are about to undertake a paper based written exam you will require two things writing that is readable and the ability to write quickly, then here is a tip or two

Readable writing

Writing quickly

Make life easier for the exam markers but ensuring that your hand writing is readable and legible, this has nothing to do with what you know but what the exam marker can read quickly without trying to second guess the hand writing

Practise hand writing, as you probably do most of your assessments via a keyboard then you will need to practise your hand writing skills, the key is a readable written exam paper or essay

First how do you hold your pen when writing check this guide https://helpwithhandwriting.co.uk/perfect-pen-grip

Treat it like training for a marathon, as you are about to undertake a three-hour exam, you will probably want to attempt at least two and half hours of handwriting, that’s not far off the time it takes to run a marathon

Train your handwriting

Several weeks before the exam practising handwriting for a continuous time without stopping, so as to increase your ability over a number of session times. The aim is to build up the muscle memory in your hands, arms and shoulders so that you produce a readable exam paper

If you were training for a marathon or any other sport, could you go out and run for three hours, no, so start small and build up

Start small. Try writing for 15 minutes and stop.

Next day, write for 20 minutes and stop

Following day write for 40 minutes and stop

Building up your writing time each time until you reach two hours

Try to maintain a handwriting that is readable, so be critical look at the start of the session and compare to the end of the session

What to write, this is practise so use the text from your course
